Patient Resource: Visiting Patients in Palliative Care

  1. If you develop any signs and symptoms if COVID-19, please refrain from visiting and contact your local public health center to arrange for COVID-19 testing. You will need to wait for a negative test result or public health center clearance before visiting.

  2. Each day, at the first visit, complete COVID-19 screening at the appropriate entrance (see below). When you arrive to the unit you are visiting, provide the screening receipt to the Clerk and/or Nurse. A negative COVID-19 screen is required prior to entry to any inpatient dept. Screening locations/entrances:
    1. Weeneebayko General Hospital:
      1. 7:00 AM – 3:00 PM – WGH Flagpole Entrance
      1. 3:30 PM – 7:00 AM – WGH ER Entrance
    1. Fort Albany & Attawapiskat Hospital:
      1. All hours: Main Entrance / Registration

  3. Upon entering the hospital, please sanitize your hands with the rubs provided on the walls.

  4. A medical mask is required to be worn at all times at WAHA, including while in patient rooms. A WAHA medical mask will be provided at the entrance.

  5. Please ensure you sign the Visitor Log; we will use this information in the event we have contact you for COVID-19 contact tracing.

  6. When visiting a patient in palliative care, five (5) visitors are permitted in the room at any one time. Visitors may take turns. Palliative visitation can occur day and night. There are no time restrictions.

  7. Please appoint one (1) family member to speak on the behalf of the family when having meetings with the doctors and nurses.

  8. Visitors must remain inside the patients’ room at all times during the visit. Other areas of the hospital (e.g. Cafeteria) are off limits.

  9. Coffee/tea and light snacks are provided in the room. Meals for visitors are not provided by the hospital. Visitors can leave to eat or bring in food.

If you have any questions or concerns – contact your loved one’s nurse or the unit Charge Nurse (WGH: 7:30am and 3:30pm, Mon-Fri) or ER Charge Nurse after hours.
