The Region
Weeneebayko Area Health Authority (WAHA) providers health-care services to people living along the western James Bay and Hudson Bay coasts. We get our name from the Cree people in this region who refer to the waterways that make up their traditional territory as Weeneebayko. The majority of people living in the region’s coastal communities are of proud Cree lineage.
WAHA was established following the October 1, 2010 integration of Weeneebayko Health Ahtuskaywain/Weeneebayko General Hospital in Moose Factory, James Bay General Hospital in Moosonee, Fort Albany and Attawapiskat’s hospitals and with the nursing stations in Kashechewan and Peawanuck. Our organization’s governance structure reflects the needs of the six communities we serve. Our sixteen (16) member Board of Directors provides a regional lens and guidance to WAHA’s senior management team.
All of our Board members, staff and physicians are committed to providing the highest quality of health care for the people and communities we serve. As a health-care provider in Ontario we are subject to the provisions under the Public Hospitals Act.
Commitment to Quality
The WAHA Board of Directors operates on a three year planning cycle.
WAHA is committed to ensuring that the health authority fulfills its obligation to deliver high quality standards in every aspect of health care that engages patients, community members, allied partners and Weeneebayko staff. The organization’s quality strategy provides the framework to systematically assess, evaluate and improve the structure, process and outcome related activities in care and services, highlighting an organization wide approach which is collaborative and interdisciplinary in nature. At WAHA, we strive to ensure that quality standards are defined and adhered to throughout the organization. WAHA embraces both western and traditional approaches to medicine.
Alignment
WAHA’s commitment to quality aligns with the organization’s mission, vision and values.
