Canadian Cancer Society Partnership with WAHA

Over a four day period (January 19 to 23, 2013) 76 women living along the James Bay Coast were screened for breast cancer. WAHA graciously received funding for the travel supports, accommodations and meals courtesy of the Canadian Cancer Society and through a generous donation provided by the RBC (Royal Bank of Canada) Foundation. The Northeast Cancer Centre – Health Sciences North (NECC – HSN) in Sudbury, ON was also instrumental in making this venture a possibility, providing key administrative support to make this screening clinic possible.

In the months leading up to the initiative,WAHA worked with local health units and the Ontario Breast Screening Program to identify eligible women for breast cancer screening. Close to 600 women were identified as eligible and contacted by program staff to book a breast screening appointment. Responses from the community were incredibly positive. As a result of their outreach efforts, 111 women were booked for an appointment, and 76 women were screened during the week of the initiative.
