Improving Patient Care Through Technology

On December 10th, 2020, the Weeneebayko Area Health Authority (WAHA) established a partnership with Bell Mobility. This was the result of a one-year negotiation process that produced a project to uplift the mobility coverage within the main healthcare facility at Weeneebayko General Hospital (WGH).

With this partnership, hospital staff and patients on the Bell Network will acquire full cell coverage throughout the hospital, especially in areas previously deemed as dead zones. A historic and essential benefit to this upgrade is the added presence of several mobile cell boosters. In the event the main tower loses signal or mobile connection, this will ensure full mobile coverage is still available as a back up. This increases the overall quality of WAHA’s cell signal/connection, while preventing any disruptions in communication.

Marlon Cole, Director of IT, stated that this will enable doctors to communicate with staff and other primary care providers to better facilitate optimum care in the region. Mr. Cole added that it will also allow patients to communicate with their loved ones while residing in the facility.

“Such partnership has never been available within the James Bay Region,” said Mr. Cole. “It is a tremendous achievement.”

WAHA’s Leadership Team has worked tirelessly over the years to ensure that patients get the resources they need. President and Chief Executive Officer, Lynne Innes, was key in planning, negotiating and approving this project.

The partnership has paved a path to better communication amongst patients and staff, improving efficiency in the workplace and allowing patients to feel safe by enabling them to communicate with loved ones while undergoing care.
