Winter Road Travel Guidance

Practice good road safety while travelling along the James Bay Winter Road (north) and Wetum Road (south) this winter

WAHA medical transportation provides clients with access to medically required health services that aren’t provided on the reserve or in their community of residence. This transportation includes year-round air and train service to our clients.

Clients who choose to utilize the winter roads, known as the James Bay Winter Road to the north and Wetum Road to the south, to attend medical appointments travel at their own risk. Clients travelling on the winter roads will assume responsibility for their own accommodations and meals should the winter roads close due to inclement weather and road maintenance, or in the event of mechanical issues with the client’s vehicle.

When traveling on the winter roads, clients must plan accordingly to attend their medical appointments in a timely manner. If you cannot travel, please contact the medical transportation office at 705-336-2947 to cancel your travel.

For clients who choose to travel the winter roads, ensure your vehicle is equipped with the right tools to handle common winter driving-related tasks, and supplies you might need in an emergency, including:

  • Snow shovel, broom, and ice scraper
  • Abrasive material (sand or kitty litter), in case your vehicle gets stuck in the snow
  • Jumper cables, flashlight, and warning devices (flares and emergency markers)
  • Blankets for protection from the cold
  • Satellite phone and charger, water, food, and any necessary medicine; and
  • extra cash for unforeseen circumstances

Please note, the winter roads are maintained by local contractors. For more information on road conditions and closures, visit the following links:
