Rivers of Plenty is a community-based program dedicated to increasing awareness of and access to nutritious, culturally appropriate foods along the James Bay and Hudson Bay coasts.

On this page, you can learn about the program, stay up to date on community events, and find helpful resources.

Rivers of Plenty is delivered by:

Indigenous communities have long cared for their health and well-being through deep knowledge of the land and traditional food practices. While colonial policies have disrupted access to traditional foods and local food systems, communities continue to show resilience and leadership in reclaiming food sovereignty. Today, many are working to restore food systems that support health, culture, and connection.

Rivers of Plenty is a First Nations community-based research program focused on improving healthy eating and heart health in the Weeneebayko region.

Our partners are working together to build on existing knowledge of how healthy eating can be supported—and to share these ideas back with our communities.

From hands-on gardening workshops to practical tools and resources for families, Rivers of Plenty supports health and wellness in the region with a long-term goal of building a First Nations-led health coalition to strengthen food security.

We hope you will join us in growing something good!

Our goals:

Increase awareness of nutritional traditional and non-traditional foods through community programming and education.

Increase access to healthy foods through educational materials and resources that support harvesting.

Build a community coalition for heart health and nutrition advocacy.

All work is driven by the unique priorities and traditional knowledge of our partner communities. That’s why Rivers of Plenty activities may differ between communities!

Educational materials:
Reading nutrition labels

Nutrition labels can help us make better food choices and manage our dietary needs. However, all those numbers can be hard to understand.

Find information on how to read nutrition labels in the Rivers of Plenty resource library, along with other helpful materials.
